Eating for Wellness and Vitality

When you hear the word “diet” and the phrase “nutritional changes”, what do you think of? Slimmer waistlines, hitting that “goal weight”, or maybe even tasteless foods? Thinking that the primary goal of dietary change is weight loss is a common ideology held amongst many people. Currently, most of the food advertisements we are sold on TV, radio, ads, and social media are focused around just that: weight loss.  Because of some nutritional pioneers, this is beginning to change. The primary dietary goal for people is to become healthy and prevent disease. While studying at Bauman College, a holistic nutrition school based in Penngrove, CA, I gained in-depth knowledge about a nutritional concept called “levels of eating.” Eating for Pleasure. “If it looks good, I’ll eat it.” This category includes many refined, high-sugar foods such as cake, cookies, and ice cream. Immediate satisfaction/gratification is the primary goal of this style of eating. Eating for Energy. “I need to make it through this busy day.” This category includes fast food, such as burritos and burgers and highly caffeinated beverages. Unsteady blood sugar levels and mood swings are quite common within this style of eating. Eating for Recovery. “What have I been eating? I feel terrible. Time to cut out _(unhealthy food item)__” Many diets fall within this category; many of which are actually quite healthy (low/no sugar, more vegetables and lean meats), but they only last a short period of time before a person reverts back to their old patterns of eating.
